Keep your lung health good with these 3 tips
The majority of people want to get healthier. They rarely think about protecting and preserving the health of their lungs.
- Do not smoke or quit smoking
“Smoking is hateful to the nose, harmful to the brain, and dangerous to the lungs”. King James I
Indeed!
Smoking increases your risk of acquiring lung cancer, as you are undoubtedly aware. It is not the only condition that it can cause, though.
Additionally, it increases the severity of some illnesses. Smokers, for example, are 12 to 13 times more likely than nonsmokers to die from COPD.
When you smoke a cigarette, you breathe in thousands of substances, including nicotine, carbon monoxide, and tar. These poisons cause lung injury. They produce more mucus, make it harder for your lungs to clear themselves, and irritate and inflame tissues. As your airways gradually close, breathing becomes more challenging.
2. Avoid being exposed to pollution.
Pollutants in the air can harm your lungs and hasten your ageing. Your lungs can easily tolerate these pollutants when they are young and powerful. However, as you become older, you lose some of that resistance and become more susceptible to infections and disease.
Allow your lungs to rest. Reduce your exposure to the greatest extent possible:
- Avoid secondhand smoke and avoid going outside during peak air pollution periods.
- Avoid exercising near busy roads since you may inhale exhaust.
- Take all possible safety precautions if you are exposed to contaminants at work. Certain occupations such as building, mining, and waste management might increase the risk of being exposed to airborne contaminants.
3. Infection prevention
Infections are more hazardous to your lungs as you get older. Those who already have lung illnesses, such as COPD, are especially vulnerable to infections. Even healthy seniors can develop pneumonia if they are not vigilant.
Keeping your hands clean is the greatest method to avoid lung infections. Wash your face with warm water and soap regularly, and avoid touching your face as much as possible.
Drink plenty of water and eat plenty of fruits and vegetables — they are high in nutrients that help your immune system.
